4 FDA approved drugs; 15+ clinical candidates; 400+ patents; 21 years of GNF history!

The Genomics Institute for the Novartis Research Foundation (GNF) in San Diego, CA, seeks a bioinformatics data scientist to support our Cancer Therapeutics and Regenerative Medicine drug discovery efforts. The successful candidate will be responsible for mining large human genetic databases (e.g., TCGA, UK Biobank) as well as pre-clinical and clinical multi-omic data sets for the purpose of generating and exploring new therapeutic hypotheses. The individual will work closely with an interdisciplinary drug discovery team composed of disease area biologists, chemists, computational scientists, and translational specialists.

Responsibilities will include:

• Implement and develop state-of-the-art computational methods and data mining strategies and collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams of discovery and translational scientists to mine and analyze clinical genetic and genomic / proteomic databases in search of new drug targets, biomarkers, and compound mechanism of action.
• Formulate therapeutic hypotheses for testing in pre-clinical validation experiments, then design studies and analyze high-dimensional multi-omic datasets such as bulk and single cell RNAseq, proteomics, and genome-scale CRISPR library screening.
• Explore new analysis approaches, e.g., deep learning / AI, for addressing difficult problems in drug discovery and development e.g., identifying disease patient sub-populations for clinical enrollment, building improved human 3D multicellular models for high throughput compound screening, and using generative chemistry for the discovery of novel chemotypes with desired activities.[#video#• https://youtu.be/6zHT-WPPFLY{#400,300#}#/video#]

What you will bring to the role:

• Ph.D. in bioinformatics, computer science, biochemical engineering (or related field) plus >4 years work experience in an industrial or academic setting, with a strong emphasis on using data science to answer questions in human disease biology and therapeutics development.
• Extensive experience with one or more Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) or proteomic technologies (e.g., bulk and/or single cell RNA-Seq, ATAC-Seq, etc.) and the analytical tools to support them. Significant experience in R or Python and competency working in a Linux/Unix environment; proficiency in other languages, e.g., SQL, java, Matlab is a plus. Demonstrated working knowledge and application of biostatistics, data modeling, and machine learning / AI.
• Effective and creative problem solving ability and strong collaboration and communication skills.
• Solid publication record in cancer and/or other disease area, bioinformatics, systems biology or related disciplines.

Desirable:

• Demonstrated knowledge of cancer and/or other human disease area biology; experience with translational and clinical science preferred.

6,000 people dedicated to discovery - 5 research campuses across the globe. At Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR), NIBR Informatics serves the global NIBR research community to provide them with the best of breed, leading edge informatics platforms as well as in-depth data analysis services.
