As Global Head of Lab Equipment and Engineering (E&E), you will lead the global Equipment & Engineering organizations in Basel, Switzerland and Cambridge, Massachusetts, US to ensure high quality, efficient, and compliant scientific support in these areas for both the current and future research communities.
Laboratory Operations (LO), situated within the Scientific Operations (SO) organization, is responsible for providing integrated programs and services that support our scientific community, and has a mission to enable the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research’s (NIBR) lab scientists to focus on science in the lab through data-driven, sustainable operational excellence and innovation. LO consists of four global sub-functions and this role provides global leadership working in the key areas of equipment and engineering.
As a key member of the Global LO Leadership team, you will be responsible for ensuring the success of this global E&E sub-function through building strong partnerships with the global Operations community as well as other Novartis stakeholders. In particular, you will lead, oversee and manage the NIBR Lab Equipment Management (LEM) program in Basel and Cambridge, including any interactions with engaged third parties.
In this role you will
• Develop and execute the Global E&E strategy, aligned with the LO and SO overall strategies.
• Provide strategic and operational leadership of the global LEM program in Basel and Cambridge, including defining the overall scope and processes, driving NIBR fleet optimization and equipment sharing through analysis of the equipment utilization data, management of any involved third parties, ensuring all critical equipment is appropriately serviced, driving the NIBR CAPEX strategy for lab equipment, defining the chargeback model, adherence to the budget and optimization of program costs, ensuring transfer of best practices to other NIBR sites (especially GNF La Jolla), benchmarking the program against peers.
• Strategic leadership of the lab-to-lab/building-to-building in Basel and Cambridge and the LO engineering activities (including the Collaboratorium) in Basel.
• Partner with the global Head of Operations (HoO) community to continue to drive and execute both local and global operational projects and represent E&E at the Global and Local HoO meetings. Represent E&E in discussions with other Novartis Functions and ensure alignment and transfer of best practices as appropriate.
• Manage and mentor global E&E Associates with respect to execution of agreed upon programs and services and Attract, retain and develop talent for and within the global E&E sub-Function.
• Maintain performance to budget and resource planning for both the local and global E&E organization as well as the LEM program.
• Provide Company Manager support for local LO Associates, as appropriate.

What you will bring to the role
• PhD (or Masters coupled with extensive experience) in a relevant scientific discipline; additional management qualification would be desirable. Previous extensive experience in a senior operational leadership role within a pharmaceutical research environment.
• In-depth knowledge of laboratory operations and equipment management.
• Experience in managing third parties and experience of working within a matrix organization across countries and cultures.
• Strong strategic vision, superior leadership, excellent communication, consensus building, well developed influencing and negotiation skills with a drive for achieving operational and digital excellence.
• Demonstrated ability to work globally and effect change within the company.
• A clear sense of accountability, an ability to empower people and a high degree of mutual respect and integrity are essential factors to succeed.
• Fluent English, written and spoken, German considered a plus.
• The candidate may be required to travel internationally
