GNF is a nimble organization that can rapidly move novel ideas from the lab to the clinic. The ultimate goal is to embrace high-risk, high reward science and disrupt how researchers conduct drug discovery.

To get there, the department has two primary toolboxes: biotherapeutics and biotechnology. The biotherapeutics group leverages sophisticated protein engineering to create biologic drugs, such as antibodies and antibody-drug conjugates that can treat some of the most intractable conditions.

Antibodies are custom-designed to attack specific enemies. That trait can be used to produce drugs that are exquisitely targeted to a specific tissue, increasing drug efficacy and reducing side effects for patients

The Biotechnology group continuously pushes the envelope for how research is conducted. Driven by relentless curiosity, this team works to develop better ways to answer important scientific questions. Electrical, mechanical and bio engineers work shoulder to shoulder with chemists, biologists, protein scientists and others to develop novel research tools.

Many of these innovations replicate forces in the body. They have helped develop technologies to stretch cells, building mechanical forces into multi-well plates. These approaches can better model fibrosis and other conditions and add new relevance to high-throughput screening. GNF engineers are designing better ways to mimic these forces outside body, giving researchers new tools to probe biological systems, answer critical scientific questions and advance drug discovery.
